At a population of about 20,000 people Scugog, is big enough to offer all the amenities – shopping, dining, entertainment, health care, recreation – and small enough to feel like home.
Port Perry is a community of approximately 10,000 residents and is located in the south end of Scugog Township and is north of Toronto and Oshawa. Due to its closeness to Toronto and soon quicker access with the incoming 407 to the south, travel to the GTA will be more accessible as many local residents commute to Toronto on a daily basis to go to work. However, despite this, Port Perry serves as a hub for many smaller communities in the surrounding area. The Great Blue Heron Charitable Casino is a popular place for people to visit and is also one of the biggest employers in the area.
Many newcomers to the area are swept away by Port Perry’s Victorian-era downtown that is lined with clothing stores, cafes, small restaurants, book stores, art galleries, antique shops and other small local establishments that are unique to this specific area. There are also a number of small festivals that are popular attractions to Port Perry during the summertime. Such events include the Mississauga First Nation Pow Wow, the Highland Games, Dragon Boat Races and StreetFest. Port Perry also encourages their locals to purchase their produce from local farmers that open their homes to visitors that can pick their own seasonal fruit such as strawberries, apples and raspberries.
